Luna was running late again. The Professor would not be happy. She had been working at the lab for just over two years, and had become steadily disillusioned with his methods. She knew that they were doing important work, but she was not willing to go to extreme lengths to accomplish their goals. She had made up her mind – today was going to be the day she quit.
Hurriedly pulling her hat down to cover her ears and grabbing her bag from a hook by the creaking door, she swept out into the cold. The snow had piled up overnight, draping the forest like a huge shawl. Luna glanced down the road, wondering whether or not to wait for the buggy. It would be slow going on foot, but there was no guarantee that the buggy would be coming today at all. The blizzard had probably taken care of the bridge, and Lawrence was unlikely to risk his horses to attempt to ford the river. Sighing, Luna set off for the lab on foot.

Despite the supposed power of the Intergalactic Council of Nations, its true capacity to limit conflicts between member states was quite low, so when the venerable Confederacy of Ja'xar declared war on the Council's newest member, the Sisters of Sol, there was little that the other members could do in opposition. Few directly supported the Confederacy's move, but all were vary of its power and perfectly aware that it could be them instead. A coalition was briefly struck up to attempt to impose sanctions against the aggressors, but it quickly fell apart and the Ja'xar were left free to do as they wished.
